A friend was the victim of homophobia on Sunday. I guess I'm writing this because I still can't believe it. Thankfully there was no violence or physical harm. Still, it was upsetting. So, here's what happened....
A few days prior my friend had gone into a store to buy a new cell phone. My friend is straight, but looks very butch. That day the saleswoman was helpful and polite. The phone my friend wanted wasn't in and she would need to come back in a few days.
That brings us to Sunday. She went to pick up the phone. I didn't go along this time. She calls me and tells me she's been waiting an hour. This is a different saleswoman. She has not said 'hello', or "I'll be right with you'. Nothing. My friend wants to leave. I tell her to get the phone and report it to a manager on Monday. Several texts and 2 HOURS later the salesperson tells my friend the store is closing and she will have to come back the next day. One thing my friend was happy about was that this woman would not be getting any commission for selling her a phone.
So, she goes back the first thing Monday morning. A man who seemed to be in management was there. He was very apologetic, and told her that behavior like that would not be tolerated in his store. He then asked which phone I bought. My friend told him that I didn't buy one. He said we'll give her a free upgrade. So, I got a new phone also.
My friend pretended to be upset that I benefited from her 3 hour ordeal. But hey, I was the one who told her to be patient and wait.
My friend doesn't have tattoos, or piercings, or multicolored hair. Even if she did it shouldn't matter. But because she looks more on the masculine side she couldn't get waited on? I still have a hard time believing and understanding.
