Fathers' Day

I know that it's possible to come from a single parent home, or a home with two same sex parents and still have a wonderful, well rounded childhood experience.
But, having said that, I had a mom and dad and was definitely a 'daddy's girl'. I really can't imagine what a mess I would have turned out to be if not for him.
We had no money, and saw eye to eye on very few things. But there was never the tiniest bit of doubt that he'd do anything for any of his kids. Actually, he'd do anything for anyone at all.
All the kids in the neighborhood called him Poppy.
One day the clerk at the grocery store said, "I hope you don't mind me asking, but I always see you with children. Which ones are yours"?
Well, I knew he hated that question. He treated all the kids as if they were his. I thought, 'Dear God, maybe he won't give her a piece of his mind in front of the kids'.
He smiled at her and said, "They all belong to our live in help".
Just at that moment a little boy came running up to him and said, "Poppy! Poppy! Grammy said don't leave before she gives you a big hug"!
The clerk just looked at him and said, "Have a nice day, sir".
I can't think of him without thinking of a funny story or how mad he could make me. He always knew when I was somewhere I shouldn't be or with someone I shouldn't be with, but would let me hang myself up in the lies. His famous last words would be, "Now tell your mother. I'm not telling her for you".
The older I get the more I miss his old fashioned common sense.
